Alexia Elejalde-Ruiz, reporter for Chicago's Red Eye, included merchandise information about The Daisy Shop in her listing, "Resale wish list," published October 23 2008, an accolade for which we are grateful and in fine company.

Here's her mention:
Do you have a taste for designer jeans but don't have $200? Not sure what to do with Great Aunt Molly's lavender satin gloves? Whether you're looking to buy or sell, there's a resale store for you in Chicago, from the high-end to the low-end. The list is long: There are resale shops that specialize in vintage clothes, stereo equipment, bikes, furniture and much more.

Here's a taste of the clothing resale scene.
If you want ... A $384 Chanel belt
>> Where to go: The Daisy Shop in the Gold Coast (67 E. Oak St.) gets used couture clothing and accessories from all over the world and authenticates each piece, owner Barbara Nell said. It's not a consignment shop; all the merchandise is store-owned.
>> If you're buying: An Isaac Mizrahi coat sells for $942 at the Daisy Shop, and Armani pants go for $296. Nell calls them "relative bargains." She currently has 1,275 pieces for sale, all of them in-store and listed on the store's Web site (daisyshop.com).
>> If you're selling: The shop generally accepts clothing under four years old, unless it's vintage couture, which must be more than 30 years old. Everything must be in pristine condition.

October 13, 2008, Dana Kozlov, reporter for CBS 2, highlighted The Daisy Shop in her piece "Affordable Luxuries," an accolade for which we are grateful.

Treating Yourself While Tightening Your Belt

People Turn To Small Treats, Like New Lipstick Or Trip To Movies

CHICAGO (CBS) ― Many of us look forward to life's little luxuries, but when the economy goes south, lots of those extras get cut.

But there are always things people cling to for comfort, indulgences people refuse to live without despite the economy. CBS 2's Dana Kozlov reports you can still get what you want, for less.

Among the things people CBS 2 talked to wouldn't want to give up were Friday night dinners out, a good haircut, cable television, Whole Foods and Intelligentsia coffee.

Most of those must-haves are affordable luxuries, like lipstick, for example. A Harvard Business School professor says statistics show lipstick sales surge in economic downturns. More people go to the movies. Lottery sales go up, too.

But for those who need to cut but refuse to stop shopping, resale shops are a popular destination. The Daisy Shop in Chicago is one such store. Owner Barbara Nell sells high-end, couture clothing and she says register receipts are up.

"Our fiscal [year] begins June 1. We're 22 percent ahead, for which we are very grateful," Nell said. "And the merchandise is delicious."

But not everyone is tightening their belt now. Some basically do it all the time.

"For the most part I won't give up most of my lifestyle," one man told CBS 2. "I'm satisfied with my lifestyle and I live within my means."

Most financial advisors would agree living within your means is a good goal for everyone.

storeadore.com offered a nice review of The Daisy Shop, an accolade for which we are grateful and in fine. company

The Daisy Shop
67 East Oak Street, 6th floor
Chicago, IL 60611
312-943-8880

The Daisy Shop takes vintage to the next luxurious level by limiting its selection to strictly couture. And when we say couture, we’re not talkin’ the Juicy kind. We mean certified—according to the standards defined by the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture, the French fashion guild. At the Daisy Shop, you’ll find classic Chanel suits hanging next to timeless Christian Dior evening gowns; impeccably cut Thierry Mugler tops across from Escada blouses and Ferragamo jeans. A few modern pieces make it into the selection, as does a smattering of non-couture items like LuLu Guinness scarves, but if it’s available in the Daisy Shop, rest assured it’s top-of-the-line. The store itself, located on the 6th floor of a Gold Coast (elevator building), is cozy yet enshrouded in reverence, as the clothing awes as much as it excites. And if you’re in the market for a fashion history lesson, stop by The Daisy Shop before you immerse yourself in any reading materials. The entertaining owner, Barbara Nell, is a walking encyclopedia of fashion knowledge, and is ready and willing to share it with any of her customers.

Fodor's rated The Daisy Shop as one of Chicago's Best of 25 shopping boutiques, an accolade for which we are grateful.

August, 2008 Metromix Chicago gave us a 5 star rating and a nice review, an accolade for which we are grateful.

July 31 stylechicago.com had a lot of nice things to say about The Daisy Shop, highlighting the Shop in an article about Vintage in Chicago, an accolade for which we are grateful:

Designer Vintage Mixing the old with the new
While vintage pieces have long been a source of inspiration for many famous designers, the vintage look has become increasingly popular with today's fashionistas - mixing the old with the new to have the best of both worlds.
Read on to find local Chicago resources as well as national exhibitions for the best in designer vintage clothing.

Couture Queen:

Shoppers who like to experiment with high-end garments can visit Daisy Shop (67 East Oak St., 6th floor, 312.943.8880), where current and vintage couture make up its collection of over 1,500 items. Owner Barbara Nell, who likes to call herself the "Head Daisy," carries an astounding 167 labels, with sizes ranging from a French 34 to a French 46.

"We're the place to experiment with couture," Nell said. "We carry every couture label since 1940."

Nell knows her fashion. Perhaps that's why she has been selling couture to the fashion-conscious for the past 15 years, receiving merchandise from all over the world. That said, if certain pieces are not up to her standards, Nell has no problem rejecting them. That's good news for shoppers who certainly won't find knock-offs here - it's the real deal at market price. The well-heeled and those who aspire to be like them should expect to see names like Missoni, Valentino and Gaultier. While all sales are final, Nell said that everyone walks out looking good.

Every month there's a sale on one particular label. Look to find an upcoming one in August where ball gowns and cocktail dresses will be discounted in preparation for the opening of the Chicago Symphony. For those who cannot make it down to the Oak Street location, www.daisyshop.com offers shoppers the convenience of purchasing online, complete with over 1,000 pictures of her couture items available for purchase.

December, 2007

The Editor of Metromix Chicago enjoyed her visit to The Daisy Shop and we're mighty pleased.

Got a taste for Chanel but can't shell out $10,000 for an evening gown? The Daisy Shop is wholly dedicated to the resale of women's couture, both vintage and new. Owner Barbara Nell culls estate sales for gently worn high-end designer clothing and accessories, and sells them for what she calls "relative bargains," i.e. a fraction of the original retail price, but still pricey compared with, say, your run of the mill resale shop. The shops sixth floor perch (take the elevator up from the 67 E. Oak Street entrance) feels slightly attic-like, and is packed wall to wall with racks of clothing. Name a big-name designer and most likely you'll find at least one thing designed by them here, including Armani, Badgley Mischka, Missoni, Lanvin, Gaultier, Michael Kors, Sonia Rykiel and many, many more.

Nell is delightfully brash, so ask her anything and she'll tell it like it is. Her all-time favorite item that's come into the store over the years is an extremely rare scarf made by Parisian couturiere Madame Gres in the 1930s. And considering most of the spunky ladies working the counter are over 50, you might be surprised to find out the shop has been running a fairly elaborate website since the late '90s, which more than a thousand items pictured and available for international purchase (Nell sells a ton to Hong Kong, she says).

Frommer's Review
A significant step up from your standard vintage store, The Daisy Shop specializes in couture fashions. These designer duds come from the closets of the city's most stylish socialites and carry appropriately hefty price tags. Even so, paying hundreds of dollars for a pristine Chanel suit or Louis Vuitton bag can still be considered a bargain, and well-dressed women from throughout the world stop by here in search of the perfect one-of-a-kind item.

Kay Peterson of Digital City, a woman who's exceptionally perspicacious, likes us!

From the second you enter this sixth-floor Gold Coast boutique, you know this isn't run of the mill -- not even for upscale women's consignment. The Daisy Shop specializes in couture -- gently worn, noble items, as the owner calls them -- and that, plus the commitment to quality have made a name for the store. A collage of awards and glowing reviews greet you in the entryway, quickly followed by the friendly and attentive staff. And that friendly staff will be happy to highlight the wide range of items, including gowns, minks, blazers and suits from the creme-de-la-creme of couture designers. Think Versace, Valentino, St. John, Gucci and the like. No wonder the owner brags that her store has the "Oh, my God!" effect on customers. And while the store boasts an international reputation, the shop itself is homey and comfortable. But before you pack your credit cards in search of a cheap mink, bear in mind: What's considered a bargain by couture shoppers ain't cheap for ordinary folk. by Kay Peterson
